Sclerotherapy/ Spider Vein Treatment
Sclerotherapy is a noninvasive procedure designed to improve the appearance of leg spider veins. The veins are injected with a solution that damages the internal lining of the vein, causing it to close. The solution works with your body to collapse the vein, and, in time, will cause it to disappear
How to Prepare
No lotion should be applied to the legs before the procedure and you should purchase your support stockings before your appointment and bring them with you to wear after your procedure. We recommend avoiding aspirin, ibuprofen (such as Advil, Motrin, and Nuprin) or other anti-inflammatory drugs for a few days before Sclerotherapy, as this may cause you to bruise. Tylenol is fine to take.
What to Expect During Sclerotherapy
The Sclerotherapy solution is injected directly into the vein which can potentially cause mild discomfort. However, our patients boast that the procedure is virtually pain free. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and number of veins being injected during a session.
Sclerotherapy generally does not require any recovery period in that you will be able to return to your normal activities right after your procedure. We do recommend that you avoid strenuous leg exercises, excessive sun exposure, and hot tubs and hot baths for about 5-10 days after treatment in order to get the best result. After your appointment, you will need to wear support stockings for 5-7 days (you do not need to wear them at night).
Typical Sclerotherapy Candidate:
Anyone hoping to improve the appearance of their leg spider veins is a candidate for this procedure. If you struggle with varicose veins, however, we will encourage you to seek other forms of treatment before we can treat your spider veins.
