Laser Hair Removal
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is exactly what it sounds like: a laser is used to destroy the follicle, causing the hair to stop growing. It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the U.S. and at Loftus Total Skin Care. Laser hair removal works the very best on those with dark hair and light skin; but we see improvements in most people whose hair is darker than their skin color.
Commonly Treated Laser Hair Removal Areas
- Bikini area
- Face and Neck
How to Prepare
Six weeks prior to treatment, you must stop plucking, waxing, and electrolysis treatments, as the hair follicle must remain intact in order for the laser treatment to work. You must also avoid sun exposure for six weeks before and after treatment, as tanned skin is harder to treat effectively. Lasers are attracted to color. If your skin is too dark, the laser might target it instead of the hair. It is recommended that you shave the intended treatment area the day of your appointment.
What to Expect During
After your clinician cleanses the intended treatment area, she may apply a topical numbing depending on the sensitivity of the area. However, most of our patients say that there is minimal discomfort during the treatment, and they compare the feeling to the snapping of a rubber band against the skin. You and your clinician will wear protective eyewear for the duration of your treatment. Most patients require four or more treatments for optimal results in order to impact the hair follicle at the correct stage of growth.
You may see some redness and swelling, but laser hair removal does not require downtime. Other than limiting your sun exposure to the treated area, you will be able to return to normal activities after your treatment.
The ideal candidate for laser hair removal is someone with light skin and dark hair. However, we are seeing that most of our patients, regardless of skin tone and hair color are seeing results from their laser treatments. We encourage you to set up a consultation with one of our clinicians to find out how effective laser hair removal will be for you.
